Decatur, IL, farm couple Bob and Libby Miller have developed several gardening techniques to accommodate Bob's impaired vision. The Garden-Perimeter Marking System consists of 2-inch by 6-inch boards that have been placed end-to- end around the garden's perimeter, with 3-foot-high, shepherd's crook-shaped steel stakes at the four corners. Dabs of silicone caulk on the rounded head of a stake identify each corner—i.e., the stake with one dab being the corner closest to where Bob enters the garden, with stakes 2, 3, and 4 in clockwise order around the garden. The Garden-Row Marking System includes (a) 1-inch by 2-inch pieces of wood cut to desired lengths to set the spacing between rows, and (b) 1-inch by 2-inch stakes at the end of each row and connected by twine to lay out the rows for planting. The Garden-Crop Identification System is simply varying numbers of rubber bands on the row-end stakes that signify what's been planted in each row—e.g., one rubber band means lettuce, two means onions, three means beets, etc.
