Caked Feed Dispenser
"Caked feed," which provides cattle with specific nutrients they don't re-ceive from the pasture alone, comes in small pellets and is usually fed from a 5-gallon bucket. A Caked Feed Dispenser allows Ismay, MT, rancher William Hopkins to distribute the pellets from the back of his pickup truck without him having to leave the cab. The device, which he attached to a Dew-Eze bale lifter, consists of a 55-gallon drum, a section of galvanized pipe, and a piece of chain. The pipe was passed through holes near the top of the drum so it hangs vertically. Both pipe and drum were then suspended across the arms of the bale lifter (which is used to hoist the drum from the ground to the pickup bed). When the filled drum is on the truck, Hopkins hooks the chain across the bale lifter's arms below where the pipe is attached such that the barrel tips when the arms are lowered (see figure), slowly pouring out the pellets as the truck moves.
