A Personal Sound Amplifier is a wearable, battery-powered device that gathers, amplifies, and enhances sound and transmits it via cord to headphone, earbuds, or even in-canal receiver. Designed for persons with a measure of hearing loss but not to the degree of requiring hearing aids, it's a relatively economical solution for sometimes-difficult hearing situations- e.g., conversing in a noisy or crowded setting or from a distance, watching TV/movie, listening to a lecture/sermon, attending a public meeting.
